Buying Guide (October 2016)

Hey there everyone. First of all, I want to apologize for my lateness. I’m not Ye, so you shouldn’t feel honored by it. Second of all, I want to apologize for not writing much lately. Life is really doing an number on me. But this is not the space to wax poetic about that. Let’s get to a busy October shall we? A decent mix of games here I must say. Quite a few remasters though. But that’s ok. Oh yeah, Playstation VR! If you care.

Oct 1 – Oct 10

Mafia 3 (Oct 7 for PC, PS4, XB1) – The year is 1968. Lincoln Clay has returned home from Vietnam, only to watch his “family” die at the hands of the Italian mafia. Does he run and hide? Does he deem his life no longer worth living? Hell to the nawl. Lincoln, with your help of course, is going to flip New Orleans upside down. Let’s do it.

Paper Mario: Color Splash (Oct 7 for Wii U) – The Paper Mario series is a very imaginative and vibrant take on the traditional RPG. This latest entry tasks Mario with returning the color to Prism Island. Part RPG, part card battle game, all Mario. What are you waiting for! Go save the day!

  • Atari Flashback Classics Vol. 1 and 2 (Oct 4 for PS4, XB1)
  • Mortal Kombat XL (October 4 for PC)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 – Salvation DLC (October 6 for PC, XB1)
  • Ride 2 (Oct 7 for PC, PS4, XB1)
  • Thumper (Oct 10 for PS4)

Oct 11 – Oct 17

Playstation VR (Oct 13) – It launches this month as you can see. I don’t feel like writing much more about it, so I won’t. I’m thinking about a separate piece, so look out for that. Maybe.

Gears of War 4 (Oct 11 for XB1) – Gears 3 if you ask most fans. Anyway, a new generation of alien busting baddies is on the scene, ready to finish what Marcus and the gang started. Horde 3.0 almost got me to buy an XBox One, so there’s that. Anyway, it’s Gears. The real Gears. Not that unnumbered abomination. So get it.

Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration Edition/ Blood Ties (Oct 11 for PC, PS4, XB1) – PS4 owners can finally experience the sequel to the breathtaking Tomb Raider reboot. This version includes all previous DLC, as well as “Blood Ties” which explores Lara’s childhood. Don’t miss this. I implore you.

WWE 2K17 (Oct 11 for PS4, XB1, 360, PS3) – I’m pretty sure if you don’t buy WWE this year, Brock will show up for an impromptu trip to Suplex City. So keep that in mind when you decide whether or not to purchase. There seem to be a lot of gameplay tweaks that smooth out the overall product, so if you liked last year’s version you should be excited.

MGS V: The Definitive Experience (Oct 11 for PC, PS4, XB1) – Kojima’s swan song for Konami has resurfaced. This version will bring Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain together to complete the vision. All DLC will also be included.

  • Dragon Quest Builders (Oct 11 for PS4, PS3, PS Vita)
  • Aragami (Oct 11 for Linux, Mac, PC, PS4)
  • World War Toons (Oct 13 for PS4)

Oct 18 – Oct 24

Battlefield 1 (Oct 21 for PC, PS4, XB1) – Let’s revisit WORLD WAR ONE YAYYYYYY! I will continue to question the decision to veer away from the future with Battlefield’s latest installment. Maybe they wanted to set themselves apart from COD. Anyway, This is your weekend BF fans. Enjoy it.

Batman: Return To Arkham (Oct 18 for PS4, XB1) – Who wants to replay Arkham Asylum and Arkham City? You do? You’re in luck! This collection will, as per the standard these days, include all previous DLC and updated visuals. It does not include therapy to get the Scarecrow sequences out of your head.

  • Rock Band Rivals Expansion (Oct 18 for PS4, XB1)
  • Sid Meier’s Civilization VI (Oct 21 for PC)

Oct 25 – Oct 31

TitanFall 2 (Oct 28 for PC, PS4, XB1) – Single player mode. Let’s start right the fuck there. With that out of the way, the beta was receiving positive reviews, so let’s hope Respawn learned from their previous effort. While a little uneven, it was promising. Similar to another title we will talk about next month. Watch…..for it.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition (Oct 25 for PC, PS4, XB1) – Another remaster. Do I have to explain at this point? No? Ok.

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition (Oct 25 for PC, PS4, XB1, Wii U) – See Skyrim entry. Exit stage right. I couldn’t find a trailer so my apologies.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 (Oct 25 for PS4, XB1) – This sequel takes place 2 years after the first, and the timeline is once again in flux. Go fix it or whatever. Smack Cell in his perfect face on your way.

World of Final Fantasy (Oct 25 for PS4, PS Vita) – This particular FF title is somewhat of a throwback. It’s a little simpler than your average FF title, as it is designed to attract younger gamers. The battle revolves around a stacking feature that utilizes monsters to give you many strategic options for combat. I’m actually excited to play it, but it looks like a niche title even by FF standards.

  • Dark Souls 3: Ashes of Ariandel (Oct 25 for PC, PS4, XB1)
  • Just Dance 2017 (Oct 25 for PC, PS3, PS4, XB1, 360, Wii, Wii U)
  • Farming Simulator 2017 (Oct 25 for PC, PS4, XB1)

Loot Crate

Games With Gold – I can’t really vouch for any of these games, although I think The Escapists was well recieved. But hey, they are free. So check them out anyway.

  • Super Mega Baseball (XB1 All Month)
  • The Escapists (XB1 Oct 16 to Nov 15)
  • MK vs ATV Reflex (360 Oct 1 to Oct 15)
  • I Am Alive (360 Oct 16 to Oct 31)

PS Plus – I CAN vouch for the OG Resident Evil. So get that yesterday. And sample the others. Transformers is made by Platinum Games, so peep that.

  • Resident Evil (PS4)
  • Transformers: Devastation (PS4)
  • Mad Riders (PS3)
  • From Dust (PS3)
  • Actual Sunlight (Vita)
  • Code: Realize *Guardian of Rebirth* (Vita)

So let’s review. A ton of sequels. A ton of remasters. Playstation VR. And then there is World of Final Fantasy. Sounds about right lol. In any event, there is a lot of quality to choose from this month. Especially if these remasters are games you haven’t played. They are all pretty great honestly. So have fun diving in!
