Buying Guide: August 2016

Hello there gamers! Hopefully you have been doing OK this summer. It’s been pretty hot, so the need for quality games has risen with people staying in where it’s cool. August is traditionally super light, but this year seems like an exception IMO. Either way, it’s still our job to let you know what’s out there. So let’s punch the clock.

August 1-8

Batman: The Telltale Series Episode 1 – Realm of Shadows (August 2 for PS4, XB1, PC and Mac, iOS and Android) – Tell a friend to tell a friend that Telltale season has returned. This time around, they take their crack at the Batman universe. I can’t really describe how exciting this is to me, but their penchant for crafting emotionally weighty stories that feature fantastically designed split second choices is unparalled. Maybe that sentence displayed a little of my excitement.

Abzu (August 2 for PS4 and PC) – Man is this game purrrrrrrdy. I wont pretend to know EXACTLY what it entails, but I do know it is built around exploring the ocean. It gives me the vibe of games like Flower and Journey, so if those experiences moved you then I think you will be interested in this. If not, then I would suggest you wait for reviews to make the picture clearer before making a decision.

  • Strange Night (August 1 for PC)
  • Don’t Starve: Shipwrecked Expansion (August 2 for PS4 and XB1)

August 9-15

No Man’s Sky  (August 9 for PS4, August 12 for PC) – Look man. I have no idea what to expect from this game. At all. I haven’t been paying the MOST attention to it, but those who have are similarly confused. So I can’t sit here and endorse it. But I can say it seems to be very ambitious and unique. Space exploration sounds fun, but what exactly does that entail? Can I explore with others? Is there an endgame or narrative at all? Is there a game over? I will always encourage people to pay attention to games that are off the beaten path, so let’s at least keep our eye on this one after release and see what the word is.

  • Uno (August 9 for PS4, XB1 and PC)
  • Emily Wants To Play (August 9 for PS4)

August 16-22

Grow Up (August 16 for PC, PS4, XB1) – BUD is exploring the universe when MOM explodes! Follow him as he tries to collect all her parts and get home. A colorful, kid-friendly game everyone can enjoy.

Bound (August 16 for PS4) – Follow a woman’s introspective journey through dance in this Sony Santa Monica beauty. Think Flower meets rhythm. The mix of platforming and dance seems perfect, so hopefully the gameplay will match the visuals and vibe presented. Check out the trailer below.

  • Inversus (PC, PS4) – August 16
  • Read Only Memories (PS4, PSVita) – August 16
  • 28 Waves Later (PC) – August 17
  • Metroid Prime: Federation Force (3DS) – August 19
  • 3D Gunstar Heroes (3DS)

August 23-31

Alone With You (August 23 for PS4 and Vita) – The trailer creeped me (Robyn) out enough to pre-emptively pass, but I have to admit, solving the mystery and exploring the love affair kinda made me go find a trailer that didn’t make me feel like I was being watched.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (August 23 for PC, PS4 and XB1)  – MOAR CYBERPUNK! Get into this long awaited stealth RPG. Adam Jensen returns in the next chapter of the Deus Ex story, complete with all of his cybernetic enhancements. The last title was well received, so here’s hoping for steady progression.

Madden NFL ’17 (August 23 for PS3, PS4, 360, XB1) – Get your obligatory annual purchase. Or don’t, lol. That’s pretty much the choice now.

King of Fighters XIV (August 23 for PS4) – Yet another exclusive fighting game graces Sony’s home console. Bring home the latest release of what many (including one very important person on the team) consider the greatest FG franchise ever.

Attack on Titan (August 30 for PC, PS3, PS4, PSVita, XB1) – The popular TV anime gets a Omega Force and Koei Tecmo work-over for this late-month game. Japanese reviews (where it released in Feburary) have been positive, so fans of the anime or action games may want to check this out.

  • Worms WMD (August 23 for PS4, XB1)
  • Metrico+ (August 23 for PC, PS4, XB1)
  • The Other 99 (August 30 for PC, PS4, XB1)
  • Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X (August 30 for PS4, PSVita)

Loot Crate

Games With Gold – On Xbox One, Gold members can download Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate during the entire month of August. WWE 2K16  will be available from August 16th to September 15th. On Xbox 360, Spelunky will be free for Gold members from August 1st through August 15th. Then on August 16th, Gold Members can download Beyond Good and Evil HD through August 31st.

Fall is almost upon us. So go grab anything that catches your eye, and complete it along with your backlog. It’s about to get a bit authentic as we all know. Happy gaming!
