First and foremost, I want to start off by saying that this is based off of a mini-rant that Robyn had a few weeks ago on Twitter. I’m just capitalizing on this because this, also, has been bothering me for a while on different aspects.
Now, let me say that this generation of games aren’t trash at all; you are trash my fellow “bro-gamer/mainstreamer”! Your. Gaming. Library. Is. Dumpster juice! Your gaming preferences are straight garbage! Your opinions on video games are the epitome of the 2008 Detroit Lions! (Apologies to the readers who are Lions fans, but I’m that upset.)
For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, I’m talking about that certain section of “gamers” who like to think that today’s games are terrible or no fun at all. Why is that an issue for me? Because these type of people say that and hardly ever play any other games besides the NBA 2Ks, Maddens (BRING BACK NFL 2K!!), and the Call of Duties of the world. If it’s not these games then they’re not going to play them because “they are terrible”. Now, there’s nothing wrong with these games *holds back COD comments*. In fact, I enjoy a mainstream game myself: Grand Theft Auto V. My main issue is seeing these same types of gamers coming out of the woodwork every E3 and saying “This game looks boring……this game is terrible…..YO!!! New COD!!!…..Man, nobody cares about Final Fantasy…..” Of course they’re bad to you. You only play like 3 or 4 games for 6 years straight!
Sometimes, these same folks will venture out of their comfort zone and play something different. However, even that turns out to be some bull because they’ll dabble with a different genre or 2 and won’t go any further. One of my favorite examples of this is Mortal Kombat. “Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! MK is an awesome game and I love it!” I’m sure you do Mr. Button Mash My Way To A Win So I Can Pause The Game To Look Up How I Do A Fatality (quite the last name, huh). We all saw the hype over MKX, but how long did that hype last? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not too big on MK, but even I knew how great MKX was. However, it was hyped up by the mainstream gamers (for good reason), executed well, and bought only for them to button mash their way through story mode for 2 weeks & sell it back to the game store. Then, the same people had the nerve to say it was the best fighting game of all time! How would YOU know? You didn’t even wait for the rest of the characters to come out. They also treated GTAV like this too; but instead they said the game was dull and useless at the end. What’s funny is that GTA Online ended up being a super huge thing over the years with lots of stuff to do now with the addition of being on the PC now (mods galore).
“I just don’t see myself going out of my way to buy those games, though.” Hahaha! That’s a sorry excuse. Now, this entire article I’ve been referring to the current gen systems like the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 (let’s face it, there’s loads of fun on the Wii so no need to mention them). If you own these systems and play online, it’s a guarantee that you’re a premium subscriber to their game’s service: PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live. Why is that relevant? BECAUSE YOU DON’T NEED TO BUY “THOSE” GAMES! THESE SERVICES GIVE YOU FREE GAMES EVERY MONTH! This is how I really know you “gamers” aren’t venturing out. Now I’m not sure about the XBL free games, but the PS Plus free games have been really good. Granted they’ve mostly been indie games (except last month had NBA 2K16…..in case you wanted some extra money selling that hardcopy), but a lot of them have been really good additions to my library. Not only that, they even offer huge discounts for name-brand games that really aren’t a big deal out of your pocket: some $60 games have been had for $10 or less and that’s not an exaggeration. So stop making excuses!
This gen’s gaming libraries have been a lot more vast & diverse than ever before. Granted there are some genres that are still lacking, but they’re about to be quite full soon. Why does that matter? Because games today aren’t trash, you are! Get out of your little ego bubble and play something different for once. Why did you spend/own a $300+ gaming system only to use 3% of its greatness? Why are you playing 4/1103 games and saying video games are terrible? Get your [gaming] life right!
