Buying Guide: July 2015

Fresh off of an exciting E3, we arrive in the dog days of summer. We dream of those sparkly fall releases while we toil away at work to save our Rupees for the gaming gods end of year offerings. Before we arrive at the magical fall season, we must endure the drought. Summer is usually quiet on the gaming front, but a few quality releases will sneak out devoid of competition. Let’s see if that is the case for the month of July.

Week of July 7th

Skullgirls: 2nd Encore (PS4) – The original Skullgirls was old school 2D fighting at its finest. This upgraded version will include all prior DLC and even more breathtaking visuals. I will say it’s not the most noob friendly fighting game, but there is an excellent tutorial mode for those who will invest the time. A PS Vita version is set for release later this year, so for now you’ll have to play at home.

Week of July 14th

God of War 3: Remastered (PS4) – I still remember how I felt when I first laid eyes on Kratos third adventure. It was one of those experiences that just felt magical. I wish that experience for everyone who missed out on it for lack of a PS3, and hopefully some of you will indulge. It will run at that ever elusive 1080/60 benchmark, and a photo mode is included to capture those exciting moments the series is known for. Relive Kratos swan song. Or is it…..

Godzilla: The Game (PS4, PS3) – The PS4 finally has its killer exclusive! Seriously, you couldn’t pay me to believe this will be good. I really included it in the guide to tell you NOT TO BUY IT. I feel that strongly about it. With that said, if Godzilla is your thing, or you have more faith than I, it’s only a week away. Have at it.

Also look out for the Trials Fusion: Awesome Level Max expansion if you are a fan of the original.

Week of July 21

F1 2015 (PS4, XB1, PC) – F1 fans can look forward to new physics and a new visual engine from Codemasters in 2015. I’m no F1 guy, but the game looks great in my uninformed opinion. I wish I had more to add, but I don’t, so there’s that. Racing and F1 fans might want to give this a look.

Free Stuff

PS Plus is offering a few games this month. PS4 owners can download Styx: Master of Shadows and Rocket League. I recommend you check out Rocket League. The PS3 is unloved this month 😦 but the Vita will receive the awesome Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved and Nekoburo.

On the Games With Gold side, XBox One owners will get Assassin’s Creed Black Flag! Hooray for Triple A. They will also get So Many Me which looks like a great platormer. 360 owners will get Gears of War 3! AAA AGAIN! Alongside it comes Plants vs Zombies. This is a really nice haul for the month.

Dog days indeed. I don’t see anything amazing, but there are some solid options here. Especially when you look at the free games. In any event, one might want to take this time to clear their backlog and check out a couple of these titles. Not Godzilla though. Please, no. Happy gaming everyone!
